Blarer was the son of the Konstanz merchant Hans Blarer († 1505) and his second wife Katharina Schilter. The children of his stepbrother Augustin Blarer († 1502) were Ambrosius Blarer , the reformer of Constance and one of the reformers of the Duchy of Württemberg, Thomas Blarer and Margarete Blarer .

Blarer became a novice of the Benedictines in Weingarten monastery in 1511 . He studied canon law in Freiburg im Breisgau , Vienna and Ferrara . In 1520 he became abbot of Weingarten and in 1547 also abbot of the imperial abbey of Ochsenhausen in Upper Swabia . In 1523 Abbot Gerwig became chairman of the college of Swabian prelates; In 1530 he was appointed imperial councilor and court chaplain. Both Emperor Charles V and his brother Ferdinand I gladly took his advice; he was entrusted with important tasks and missions. Pope Julius II appointed him his legate, and Emperor Charles V appointed him his commissioner at the Imperial Court of Justice in 1556. Blarer became known as the opinion leader of the Catholics of Upper Swabia during the Reformation .

In 1556 he obtained an ordinance from Emperor Charles V for the imperial abbey of Ochsenhausen, which put a stop to the pernicious trade tricks of the Jews .

He was considered Weingarten's most political abbot and played an important role with the prelate Johann Fabri from Leutkirch during the Reformation in Upper Swabia. In 1537 he received the right to use the pontificals.

His successor in Weingarten was Johann Hablitzel .
