St. Moritz Church in Stempeda (2014)

history

The St. Moritz Church is the only church in Europe made of gypsum stone . The origins of the choir tower church go back to the Romanesque construction period. Based on the designs of the eastern choir tower and the Arc de Triomphe and the St. Mauritius - Patroziniums can suggest a time of origin in the 11th century.

In 1604 the church was rebuilt, whereby the tower shaft of the previous church was still used. A major renovation is recorded for 1891. The tower roof was completely rebuilt.

From 1967 the church was closed due to dilapidation. In 1996 work began on rescuing the building, which was inaugurated in 2004.

In the recent past, the parish and citizens renovated the dilapidated church so that prayers can take place again.

The altar and the baptismal angel are remarkable .

The organ was built in 1806 by the organ builder Heinrich Deppe from Nordhausen.

An additional plaque on the war memorial near the church reminds: "We remember the post-war victims".
