history

middle Ages

From the end of the 11th to the beginning of the 12th century the church was built as a three-aisled , flat-roofed pillar basilica . In the middle of the 13th century, the semicircular apse was replaced by a five-sided Gothic choir closure over a crypt . The choir square and side choirs were vaulted and the west portal was enlarged. In the second half of the 15th century the central nave was vaulted and in 1486 the sacristy was completed. The choir square was connected to the side choirs and the aisles were pulled up to the tower front.

Early modern times and modern times

In 1679 during the Palatinate War , the town and church were burned down. The ruin was used as a stable. The building was rebuilt in the first half of the 18th century. At the beginning of the 19th century, the tower was shortened by three meters and equipped with a low hood. During the Second World War , the building was destroyed except for parts of the tower and the crypt. From 1946 to 1949, the church was rebuilt based on the previous Romanesque building. The crypt was added to the new building. The construction manager was the Cologne cathedral builder Willy Weyres .

Romanesque and modern style elements complement each other in the interior. The pulpit comes from Johannes Scherl from Wittlich.
