The Catholic St. Paulus Church in Quakenbrück is in the Hengelage district.

The St. Paulus congregation owes its existence to the extreme peripheral location of Quakenbrück; the Hengelage district used to be part of the Oldenburg community of Essen , but protrudes into the urban area of Quakenbrück, almost into the old town.

The Catholics of this area have always been looked after by the Quakenbrücker parish of St. Marien , because the officially responsible parish church of Essen was more than five kilometers away. In order to remedy this “pastoral grievance”, the St. Paulus Church was built on the Hengelage in 1963/64.

Politically, this area has belonged to the city of Quakenbrück since the territorial reform of 1972, so that parishes of two dioceses ( Münster and Osnabrück ) were temporarily within the urban area . At the request of the bishops of Münster and Osnabrück, the Bishops' Congregation, by decree of April 19, 2002, restructured the parish of St. Paul into the Diocese of Osnabrück .
