The St. Petersburgische Zeitung (SPZ) was a German-language monthly newspaper from Saint Petersburg , Russia. From 1991 it appeared as a monthly newspaper under the title St. Petersburgische Zeitung . The name of the newspaper goes back to the daily newspaper St. Petersburgische Zeitung , which was published in Tsarist Russia from 1727 to 1915 .

Start as a print

In the new Russia in 1991 an attempt was made to revive a German-language newspaper in Saint Petersburg as a free weekly newspaper under the traditional title Saint Petersburgische Zeitung . However, the frequency of publication was changed back to monthly. The rarer publication and lower circulation than before the First World War is mainly explained by the fact that instead of around 50,000 as then, only around 5,000 native German speakers live in the city today. In addition, the newspaper was read by tourists because it is distributed by hotels with German-speaking guests.

Cooperation with Russia Current and End

From 2005 to the end of 2007, the newspaper cooperates with the online medium Russland Aktuell . The Russia-Aktuell editor Lothar Deeg was editor-in-chief of the St. Petersburgische Zeitung during this time. There was an independently edited online edition of the newspaper, which, however, was dissolved following the end of the cooperation with Russia Aktuell. The St. Petersburgische Zeitung was the only German-language newspaper in St. Petersburg that had an official license from the Russian authorities.

As a result of this separation, the Sankt Petersburger Zeitung set up its own online presence again, but initially without online news publication. This was last available under the domain www.petersburgische.de. At the beginning of the 2010s, the newspaper initially stopped appearing as a print edition, and most recently its website went offline.
