St. Stephanus in Hamburg-Eimsbüttel is a former Protestant church that was deconsecrated in 2005 and is now an event center. It is located at the confluence of Sartoriusstrasse and Lutterothstrasse .

Construction and use until 2005

The brick building designed by the architects Distel and Grubitz and inaugurated in 1912 was the third and smallest church building in the rapidly growing community in Eimsbüttel. It was built on a fairly small plot of land and connects the church and pastorate in a building complex, where only the tower made its use clear at first glance. The location on a street corner is emphasized by the tower and the diagonal staircase to the vestibule. The original church space is a wide hall with attached flat aisles.

The dark clinker brick facades are decorated sparingly and, together with the tower, which is quite low for an urban church, create a restrained impression. The building is in the tradition of north German brick buildings in the sense of the home style . Julius Faulwasser mentioned the harmonious overall impression in particular in 1914 .

After the Second World War , the undestroyed building served as an emergency shelter .

From 1956 to 1957, the then independent community of St. Stephanus initiated a building renovation and redesign of the interior by the architects Hopp and Jäger . Not only was the dilapidated concrete floor replaced, but the old gallery and large parts of the original furnishings were also removed. Among other things, the church contained a mosaic by Claus Wallner .

In 1998 the church was incorporated into the Evangelical Lutheran parish of Eimsbüttel. On Palm Sunday 2005, the church was dedicated by Bishop Maria Jepsen and the altar, Bible and cross were brought in procession to the nearby Apostle Church .
