location

The church is located on the Sachsenhausen mountain in a residential area on the edge of the Südfriedhof, between Altes Schützenhüttengäßchen and Heinrich-Limpert-Weg, and is supplemented by a community center and a kindergarten.

architecture

The lengthwise hall church closes in the east with a round apse . It is about 42 meters long, 15 meters wide and 16 meters high. To the northwest rises a round, approximately 34-meter-high bell tower. In the northeast, the church is supplemented by a weekday chapel, the floor plan of which corresponds to the nave in a reduced form.

The walls made of quarry stone are made of trachyte . The statically relevant reinforced concrete parts are left visible. Sixteen supports support the wall panels, which are divided by horizontal and vertical ribbon windows. The wired glass ribbon windows run at floor level and under the ceiling. They give the impression that the heavy stone walls are floating above the ground. A wide wall-high window is on the south side at the height of the altar. The church was consecrated on November 10, 1957 and in 1976 Johannes Krahn and his son added a new parish hall. It is a listed building.

Furnishing

The stained glass window on the south side was created by Georg Meistermann . The altar crucifix made of bronze comes from Hans Mettel . The goldsmiths are by Fritz Schwerdt and Friedrich Gebhart. The organ in the gallery above the main entrance was made by Förster & Nicolaus Orgelbau . It comprises 31 registers and was installed in 1966.

The weekday chapel is plastered in light gray and thus sets itself apart from the natural stone masonry. In the chapel there is a wooden sculpture of Mary with a blessing child from the 14th century, a wooden sculpture of Saint Wendelin from the 18th century and a wool carpet by Ortrud Spatz. The bronze bells were manufactured in 1958 by the Heidelberg company Friedrich Wilhelm Schilling and sound in the tones es ', f', as ', and b'.

Church and History

As early as 1938, the architect Martin Weber set up an emergency church for the community on a former brewery site. This was hardly damaged during the war and was not replaced until 1957 when the St. Wendel Church was rebuilt. From 1969 to 1995 Lothar Zenetti worked as parish priest at St. Wendel. Today's St. Wendel parish has been part of the New Type St. Bonifatius parish since 2014 . In Sachsenhausen there was a chapel dedicated to St. Wendelin, patron saint of shepherds, on Wendelsplatz since 1369; From there, the Wendelsweg led into the city forest used as animal pasture. The St. Wendel Church continues this tradition.
