St. Wiborada Chapel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The St. Wiboradakapelle is a chapel that is attached to the St. Mangenkirche in St. Gallen .

history

The construction date is unclear, but it is at the point where the Wiborada hermitage was. It is mentioned by name for the first time on January 2, 1456 in the declaration by priest Johannes Rütili. The foundation of a perpetual mass in this chapel is proven. According to M. Haltmeier, the vaulted room to house the Vadian library would have been rebuilt at this point in 1567. However, this building was still referred to as the Wiborada Chapel, which suggests a redesign rather than a new building. A new building would also have been illogical, since there was already a room with the chapel. After 47 years the library was moved to the Katharinenkloster. That is why the room was given to the Collegium Musicum around 1660. In the earthquake of 1774, the structure was so badly damaged that it had to be demolished.

The present chapel was rebuilt in 1946 and is connected to the north transept of St. Mangenkirche. This opening was originally a 1.6 meter wide arched opening, but was reduced to a narrower square door as a result of the library construction.
