The St Brendan's Chapel , also Kilbrannan Chapel or Skipness Chapel , is a ruined church in the northeast of the Scottish Kintyre peninsula . It is located near the small town of Skipness near Cape Skipness Point on Kilbrannan Sound . The church was dedicated to Saint Brendan . It is now considered one of the best preserved medieval church buildings in Argyll and Bute .

history

Celtic cross in the associated cemetery

The exact construction date of the church has not been recorded, but it can be dated to the late 13th or early 14th century. It replaced the older St Columba's Chapel , the remains of which were later used in the construction of Skipness Castle . The church was in use until at least 1692 and was probably abandoned during the 18th century. The task may have been related to the construction of the new church in Claonaig, about four kilometers south- west .

graveyard

There are five medieval tombstones inside the ruins. In the cemetery to the south and east of the church there are not only medieval graves but also several younger cross plates . The cemetery is enclosed by a stone wall. As part of an archaeological investigation, dug trenches were discovered in the northeast, which indicate a planned expansion of the cemetery, which was then no longer carried out. Two graves were found near the church wall that date from an earlier time than the church wall. Part of the cemetery was reserved as the burial place of the local branch of the Campbell clan , some of whose graves are lavishly designed.
