history

The Brigittenkirche was built in the 12th century. In a papal bull from 1178, the church is explicitly listed as the property of Inchcolm Abbey . In 1244 the church building was consecrated. In the meantime used as the parish church of Dalgety , the building underwent major changes during the 16th and 17th centuries. After a new church was built in Dalegty Bay in 1830, St Bridget's Church became obsolete and has been idle ever since. Dalgety was abandoned in 1836 at the latest.

description

St Bridget's Church stands on the north bank of the Firth of Forth on the southeast edge of Dalegty Bay. The masonry of the elongated hall church is made of quarry stone . Only components that were added later are made of stone blocks. The early 17th century Dalgety Aisle extends from the west facade. It was added after the lands were acquired by Alexander Seton, 1st Earl of Dunfermline . His remains are buried there. Other later grave chapels go from the north and south sides. Inside the roofless church there is a historically interesting piscina .
