St David's Church (Dalkeith)
The St David's Church is a Roman Catholic church building in the Scottish town of Dalkeith in the Council Area Midlothian . In 1976 the building was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest category A.
history
The great famine in Ireland led to a wave of immigration, mainly of Catholic Irish, into Protestant Scotland. They mainly settled in the Central Belt . Lady Cecil , wife of John Kerr, 7th Marquess of Lothian, converted to Catholicism in London at this time . On her return to Newbattle , she had a Catholic church built nearby. Dalkeith was chosen as the location. St David's Church was built between 1853 and 1854 to a design by Scottish architect Joseph Hansom and opened on May 21, 1854. In the autumn of the same year, the associated elementary school was opened and in 1966 a secondary school as well.

The neo-Gothic building is located directly on the High Street , the city's main thoroughfare, at the southwest end of King's Park . The masonry of the three-nave building consists of cream-colored sandstone carved into blocks . The west-facing front is symmetrical and three axes wide. In the center is the two-winged entrance portal with a pointed arch and profiled reveal . The nave is four axes wide. The lead glass windows are pointed arches and partly worked as tracery with occuli . There is also a band of quadrupeds along the main nave . On the east gable sits a small roof turret with a bell and a stone cross at the end. The steep gable roof of the main nave is covered with gray slate.
