St John's Church

The St John's Church , formerly Dunoon Free Church is a church building of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland in the Scottish town of Dunoon . The building is in the city center at the intersection of Hanover Street and Victoria Road . In 1971, St John's Church was included in the Scottish Monument Lists, initially in Category B. In 2000 it was upgraded to the highest category A. The church is still in use as such today.

The building was erected on the site of an older church from 1843. R. A. Bryden was hired as the architect and completed the church in 1877. Like the previous building, it was initially referred to as Dunoon Free Church and only later renamed St John's Church . In 1895 Brook & Co installed an organ with two manuals . In 1921 it was finally expanded to three manuals.

St John's Church was built as layered masonry from quarry stone and has the characteristics of neo-Gothic architecture. The bell tower is located in front of the west and is offset to the main building axis. The square tower is divided into three segments, the upper one with corner turrets. The spire is octagonal . An entrance door with a pointed arch motif is let into the ground floor. The gable side of the nave next to the tower is equipped with decorated lancet windows, which are crowned by a rose window . The ship ends with a slate-covered gable roof . The eastern gable surface is framed by two smaller square towers.
