St John's Priory is a former priory church of an Augustinian canon in Kilkenny in the county of the same name in Ireland . The church building now belongs to the Anglican Church of Ireland and is not to be confused with the neighboring Roman Catholic Church of St. John's .

history

The priory with the associated hospital was founded by William Marshall in the first quarter of the 13th century for Augustinian regular canons and consecrated to John the Evangelist. The abolition of the convent took place in the course of the Reformation in 1540. As early as 1541 the church was designated as a parish church.

The nave of the Gothic priory church, built around 1250, was largely destroyed in 1780 when space was needed for buildings for the British army. The preserved choir windows, which represent a pairing of two groups of three windows, are remarkable. The original Lady Chapel of the Canons' Monastery from the 13th and 14th centuries, the so-called Lady Chapel , is used as the Anglican church interior. It was prepared for this in 1817. Its original rich lighting from five groups of three windows was reduced to three by bricking up and the three-lane east window.
