Kurt Walz

Kurt Walz (born September 6, 1904 in Blaubeuren ; † January 9, 1999 in Düsseldorf ) was a German civil engineer and concrete expert.

Life

Kurt Walz went to school in Reutlingen before he started studying civil engineering at the Technical University in Stuttgart . In 1923 he joined the Alemannia Stuttgart fraternity .

In 1927 he began to work as a research assistant at the state material testing institute under Otto Graf . In 1930 he received his doctorate with a thesis on the impermeability of mortar and concrete . In 1939, Walz completed his habilitation on the workability and mechanical properties of fresh concrete .

In 1933 he joined the Black Reichswehr , where he resigned as a sergeant. At the end of World War II he was assigned to the Volkssturm , but no longer took part in combat operations.

In 1948 Walz was appointed adjunct professor and in 1948 received a call to the University of Alexandria . In 1956 he went to the Research Institute of the Cement Industry of the Association of German Cement Works (VDZ) in Düsseldorf. He was the first director to set up the concrete technology department. From 1966 to 1970 he was the managing director of the VDZ and head of the research institute.

Walz developed the Walz curves named after him, which illustrate the relationship between concrete compressive strength , cement compressive strength and water-cement value.
