St Joseph's School is a public school in rural Swaziland . The school campus belongs to the complex of a Catholic mission of Serviten (OSM) and form the area of Mzimpofu . St Joseph's is one of the leading schools in Swaziland in integrating and educating students with disabilities .

history

The school was founded in 1914 by Father Francis Mayr . Father Mayr founded the mission to care for disabled and socially underprivileged people. In October 1914 Father Mayr was murdered by Fanyana Mdluli , who was later sentenced to death by Queen Labotsibeni Mdluli .

For over fifty years, Father Angelo “Nkomiyahlaba” Ciccone (1930–2016) served as the mission's vicar, overseeing the development of services for the disabled. In 2016, Father Ciccone died in a car accident.

School facilities

The school has numerous facilities specially designed for the education of the disabled. The school curriculum integrates the handicapped in primary school and high school and has a boarding area for the handicapped. The Ekululameni Vocational Rehabilitation Center offers courses for disabled adults. There used to be the Embelekweni Pre-School for disabled children between 0 and 5 years of age. The Zama Center offers services for students with severe intellectual disabilities. An on-site resource center provides Braille transcription services for blind students in primary and secondary schools. Part of the school's funding comes from the government of Swaziland; additional funding is provided by the German Kindernothilfe .
