Sta. Teresinha do Menino Jesus (Ossu)
The Igreja Paroquial Sta. Teresinha do Menino Jesus ( German parish church Theresia vom Kinde Jesus ) is the Catholic parish church of the East Timorese parish in Ossu . It is located in the Suco Ossu de Cima ( Ossu Administrative Office , Viqueque municipality ).
History and architecture
21,000 Catholics live in the parish, whose catchment area extends beyond the boundaries of the administrative office. It has 19 mission stations in the small villages in the area, where a service is held once a month. In the former, dilapidated church building, 1500 people attended Sunday mass every week, and another 1000 stood in front of the church. There were no loudspeakers, so the service could not be broadcast on the forecourt. The then pastor Tiago Soares da Costa therefore pushed ahead with the construction of a new church. He started a collection in which every family donated ten cents every time they went to the trade fair and also brought a chunk of stone for the foundation of the new building.
The new church building was consecrated on November 30, 2012. The red and white building with three bell towers above the portal has a green gable roof. The church portal, to which a staircase leads, is decorated with some figures and images of saints. The church clock in the main tower is a rare sight for East Timor.
