The Gotha State Archive is a state archive in the Free State of Thuringia and was located in the rooms of the former princely archive in Friedenstein Castle in Gotha until July 2014 . On March 23, 2015 it reopened in the new premises in the Perthesforum. The archive has an extensive inventory of records, files and documents from the 11th to the 20th century, which reflect part of the history of Thuringia.

Archive history

Duke Ernst I.

Duke Ernst the Pious set up an archive vault in Friedenstein Castle. The State Archives were established in 1640/1641 after the establishment of the Saxon-Ernestine Duchy of Gotha . Documents , official registers and files were taken from the main archive of the Saxon-Ernestine House of Weimar and former monasteries. In 1840 this "Secret Archive" was renamed the Ducal Saxon House and State Archive. After the end of the monarchy , the registries of the dissolved central authority of the Duchy of Saxony-Coburg and Gotha were taken over.

The archive was continued as the Thuringian State Archive from 1923, which was renamed the State Archive in 1951 and the “Historical State Archive” in 1965. From 1976 it was only the Gotha branch of the Weimar State Archives.

From 1994 to 2016 it was again as the Thuringian State Archives Gotha an independent state authority , since 2016 it belongs as a department for the State Archive of Thuringia .

Jurisdiction

Before 1918/1920, the historical jurisdiction extended to the Duchy of Gotha and its predecessor territories. In the state of Thuringia , the Gotha State Archives were responsible for state central and subordinate authorities and district administrative authorities of the districts of Gotha and Eisenach . The files of the Prussian administrative district of Erfurt were taken over. In the archive organization of the GDR it was only a historical archive after 1952.

Since the establishment of the Free State of Thuringia, the Gotha State Archive has again been responsible for the middle and lower state authorities and subordinate federal authorities.
