The Stadil Fjord is (despite the name) an approximately 1730 hectare freshwater lake , which is located about 5 km northwest of Ringkøbing and about two kilometers from the North Sea beach in Jutland, Denmark . The lake is a shallow lake with a maximum depth of just 2.5 meters. In the south-eastern part of the island lies the approximately 100 hectare publicly accessible island of Hindø , which is connected to the mainland by a small bridge. Stadil Fjord, Ringkøbing Fjord and Vest Stadil Fjord were originally a large contiguous area, but after drainage work the connection between them has been limitedFjords on a narrow channel from Vest Stadil Fjord to Stadil Fjord and the Vonå river , which flows into Ringkøbing Fjord. The Stadil Fjord also receives the water from the rivers Madum Å , Tim Å , Sund Å and Hover Å as well as some smaller streams. At the beginning of the 1990s, the lake was polluted by large amounts of nitrogen and phosphorus , which led to poor water quality. However, the lake was saved and is now one of the cleanest lakes in Denmark.

Ramsar area

The Stadil Fjord, together with the Vest Stadil Fjord, has been designated a Ramsar area , ie a protected wetland of international importance.

Ringkøbing Fjord , which is also a Ramsar area, is a few kilometers south .
