Vest Stadil Fjord used to be part of a large lake complex north of Ringkøbing Fjord . In 1863 the area was diked and the water level was lowered to 0.4 m below sea level. Most of the area was then turned into meadows and reeds. In 1954 the water level was lowered by another meter, so that most of the areas were completely drained. Up until the 1990s, the northern part of the lake was drained and cultivated for agriculture. The state bought a large part of the area in 1993 and renatured it by the end of the decade. The area is both a Ramsar area and a wildlife sanctuary.
