The Stadionul Municipal is a multi-purpose arena in the Romanian city of Sibiu .

history

In 1927, the Terenul Sportiv ONEF (playing field dimensions : 68 × 110 meters) was built on the former artillery riding arena behind the military swimming school . A tournament was played in order to generate further money for the completion of this new sports field. The games took place on June 12, 1927 and had the following outcome: HTV - NSE 3: 2 (3: 0) and Șoimii Sibiu - Aviația Mediaș 4: 2 (2: 2). From then on, Terenul Sportiv ONEF was the only venue for the football games in Sibiu and for the official field handball games, which led to some confusion in the recognition of game results in the 1927/28 season. Over the years the stadium has been modernized and renamed several times, first to Metalul and later to Șoimii . From 1977 to 1981 it was rebuilt and enlarged to 12,000 spectators, in 1982 a new grandstand was built; today the capacity is 14,200 spectators. In addition to the service area of the main grandstand, there is a 400-meter running track, an electronic scoreboard and, to the west of the round in front of the grandstand, a stadium's own park. Due to the rise of FC Hermannstadt , the stadium has been renewed since May 2018 and expanded to 19,000 seats in order to meet the requirements for League 1 .

Home clubs

After the Second World War , the stadium was the home of the second division club CSM Sibiu and its successor club Șoimii Sibiu for many years . This rose in 1986 from Divizia C and made room for FC Inter Sibiu , a newcomer to Divizia B. FC Inter played in Divizia A , the highest football league in the country, from 1988 to 1996 , before four more seasons followed in Divizia B until it was dissolved in November 2000. From 2003 until its dissolution in 2007, the second division club FC Sibiu used the stadium. From 2009 to 2012 the CSU Voința Sibiu played here , which made it to League 1 in 2011 and was dissolved in 2012. FC Hermannstadt has been playing its home games at Stadionul Municipal since 2015 .

In July 2010 the stadium was opened for the use of first division games. So it could serve in the 2010/11 season as the home venue for the first division club Gaz Metan Mediaş , whose stadium has been renovated.

International matches

The Romanian national soccer team has played three international friendly matches at Stadionul Municipal : on March 27, 1985 against Poland (0-0), on November 23, 1988 against Israel (3-0) and on March 29, 1989 against Italy (1-0) .
