Șoimii Sibiu was a Romanian football club from Sibiu . It was founded in 1913 and played a total of three years in the highest Romanian football league, Divizia A (today League 1 ). In 2001 it broke up.

history

Șoimii Sibiu (German falcon ) was founded in 1913. After the start of the league game operations in Romania in 1921, the club first played in the regional championship of Brașov and Sibiu , from 1923 in the regional championship of Sibiu to qualify for the national finals for the Romanian football championship . The club was able to qualify for the first time in 1924 , but drew the short straw in the national preliminary round against CFR Mureșul Târgu Mureș . A year later , Șoimii succeeded in qualifying again, but did not appear in the final against Jahn Czernowitz and was eliminated.

After the club could not prevail in the following years against the local rivals Sibiu gymnastics club , Șoimii only managed to qualify again in 1928 - combined with the greatest success in the club's history: After victories against Craiovan Craiova and Chinezul Timișoara , the previous six times in a row Had won the championship, the club was in the semifinals, but dropped out there after not playing against his opponent Jiul Lupeni . A year later , the national finals were over after just one game.

In the following years Șoimii did not manage to qualify for the national finals. When, however, the Romanian professional league Divizia A was launched in 1932 , the club was one of the founding members. The club could not keep up in terms of sport. Having already in the season 1932/33 had occupied the last place his group, he concluded the following season no better off and had the newly founded Divizia B dismount. There Șoimii experienced changeable years. After a penultimate place the year before, the club missed the qualification for the promotion round in 1936 just behind IAR Brașov . In the following years he fought for the club's survival and had to withdraw from the game operation both in the 1937/38 and 1938/39 seasons in the middle of the season.

After the end of the Second World War , Șoimii resumed gaming operations in Divizia C and managed to return to Divizia B in 1947. After the Communists came to power, the association joined the Romanian railway company Căile Ferate Române (CFR) and initially operated under the name Șoimii CFR Sibiu , soon after under CFR Sibiu and finally from 1949 under Locomotiva Sibiu . Under this name, the club managed to return to Divizia A in 1949, but from which he had to relegate after only one season at the end of the 1950 season . In the same year, the club moved into the semi-finals of the Romanian Cup , as in the previous year , where it was eliminated again against the eventual winners CCA Bucharest .

After relegation, Locomotiva was "passed through" and was already relegated from Divizia B in 1951, so that the club was no longer represented in national gaming operations (Divizia C was only played sporadically at the time). The club played in the leagues of Sibiu County for twenty years before merging with local rivals CSM Sibiu in 1973 and taking their place in Divizia B under its old name Șoimii Sibiu .

Initially, Șoimii was able to build on the best times in the club's history and missed promotion to Divizia A in 1974, 1975 and 1976. In the next few years, however, the club fell back into the lower midfield. At the beginning of 1981 he joined the company Întreprinderea de Piese Auto Sibiu (IPA) and changed his name to Șoimii IPA Sibiu . After six changeable years (twice the promotion was just missed, twice the relegation achieved), the club rose in 1986 in the Divizia C. There, after four years, he returned to Divizia B.

The club did not manage to transition from a planned economy to a market economy after the Romanian Revolution . In 1992 he was found guilty of a match-fixing and was fined eight points, which meant relegation to Divizia C. After renaming from IPA to COMPA, the association also changed its name to Șoimii COMPA Sibiu . In 1993 he was relegated from Divizia C and played in Divizia D of Sibiu County.

In 1995 Șoimii managed to rise again. After just a few years, the club was playing for promotion to Divizia B, which it just missed in 2000 as runner-up behind Pandurii Târgu Jiu . The club ran into financial difficulties shortly thereafter and had to withdraw from the game operations during the 2000/01 season. A short time later it broke up.
