history

City documents and privileges have been kept in the so-called secret chamber of the town hall since the 16th century . At the beginning of the 17th Century was on the orders of city counsel Johannes Althusius particularly promoted the archives. The background was that the legal scholar wanted to have old chartered rights and other archive material quickly to hand in disputes in the constant battle with the East Frisian Count House of Cirksena . He also based his political science writings in part on material from the city archive.

After the takeover of East Frisia by Prussia, Emden lost many of the urban privileges that still existed in the county of East Frisia. In the following decades, the city archives mainly collected city files.

During the Second World War the archive was relocated several times, as a result of which a large number of archive materials were lost. After the war, the archival material began to be viewed and classified again.
