The Freiburg city archive is the archive of the city of Freiburg in Switzerland. It serves the citizens, the local authorities and the local government and works closely with the city's cultural and historical institutions and associations to collect, maintain and publicize documents that form the collective memory of the city.

building

The building was originally built as a primary school based on plans by Father Gregor Girard and was inaugurated in 1819. It is located at Chorherrengasse 1 in Freiburg, on the east side of St. Nikolaus Cathedral. It served as a courthouse from 1907 and has housed the Freiburg City Archives since 2005. The building is in the Swiss cultural property protection inventory (KGS inventory) in category B under the designation Anc. Ecole des garçons listed with the number 13317.

Archives holdings

The Freiburg city archives mainly contain administrative files from the 19th and 20th centuries, i.e. from 1799/1803 to the present day. In 1803 the canton and the city of Friborg were officially separated. These are primarily documents that have been drawn up or received by the municipal council (executive), the general council (legislative), the general administration and all municipal departments. In addition, the city archive has a collection of Friborg newspapers - completed by a press review from 1993 - and a collection of photographs / postcards. Both collections are constantly being expanded.

The Freiburg City Archives also manage funds and collections that have been entrusted to the City Archives by private individuals and associations: Cercle littéraire et de commerce Freiburg, International Folklore Meeting Freiburg, Société Académique Belles-Lettres Friborg, Freiburg Tourist Office and the Jean-Dubas Fund, which is partly responsible RERO explore (abbreviation for: Résau Romand, the network of French-speaking Swiss libraries).

The city archive does not include any cantonal, parish, private, heraldic or genealogical holdings. All sources relating to the city under the Ancien Régime or up to the end of the 18th century are kept in the Freiburg State Archives; Documents concerning the diocese are archived in the archives of the diocese of Lausanne, Geneva and Friborg .

The archive of the city of Freiburg has been listed as an A object in the Swiss inventory of cultural assets of national importance (KGS inventory from 2009) since 2009.
