The Stadsarchief Ieper is the city archive of the city of Ypres and stores archival materials, some from the 13th century, on around 1300 meters of shelves . The archive manager is Rik Opsommer .
History and holdings
One of the oldest documents in the Ieper town archives is a document dated June 25, 1290, which contained a " conciliation procedure before the Count of Flanders in the course of a dispute between the city of Ypres and the abbess of Mesen Abbey over freedom of ships on individual channels Region “ notarized . After the monastery at Mesen was occupied "[...] by German soldiers in the winter of 1914/15" at the time of the First World War , the medieval document was probably stolen as spoils of war and got through the former Philosophical-Theological University of Regensburg and the faculty for Catholic theology in the possession of the University of Regensburg . “After a careful clarification of the ownership situation”, the document was restituted during a solemn ceremony in October 2014 to the Ieper city archives as the legal successor to the Mesen monastery archive .
The other holdings of the city archive include a library , historical prints, photographs , advertising media and postcards .
