The history of the Öhringer library goes back to 1950 and began with a book donation from the American and French occupying powers . The city library was initially housed in the basement of the Haus der Jugend and, due to a lack of space, had to move its 8,500 volumes to the disused town hall and to expand the inventory to 15,000 volumes. Until the completion of the renovation work in the town hall, the library had been on the ground floor of the community center (old court theater) since 1984 and moved into the premises in the old town hall in March 1994.

In 2011, the Öhringen public library was awarded the “Excellent Library” quality certificate.

In 2014 a construction measure followed in the entrance area and the introduction of self- booking and media security with RFID .
