The Düren City Library is located in the City House in Düren , North Rhine-Westphalia . The Düren city library is the oldest in the Rhineland .

history

The Düren city library was founded in February 1870 as a library for elementary school teachers. The industrialist Wilhelm Edmund Hoesch (1820–1891) from Düren donated the then very high sum of 3,000 thalers for the purchase of further books, so that on November 4, 1871 the first public library in the Rhineland could be opened "for free use by the public". At that time it was housed in the town hall. In 1891 the library moved to a side wing of the town hall. In autumn 1905 she then moved into a side wing of the newly established Leopold Hoesch Museum . During the air raid on Düren on November 16, 1944, the entire inventory was burned.

When it reopened in 1951, 2,000 books were available. On March 16, 1971, the library moved from the museum to rented rooms in Arnoldsweilerstraße . Lack of space made this move necessary. The last move was on September 28, 1991 to the current premises in the Haus der Stadt with an area of 3,000 m².

In 2010, the city of Düren's cultural operation was founded, which puts the city's cultural institutions under one administration. This includes the archive, music school, adult education center, city library and administration departments. In 2016 the name was changed to Düren Kultur .

Also in 2010, the Düren City and District Archives moved into part of the premises in the Haus der Stadt .

Support association

Since 1995 there has been a support association for the Düren city library . The friends' association is committed to the interests of the library and supports it with funds. Since it was founded, he has already donated a five-digit amount. The money comes from the book flea market held twice a month by the friends' association. The donations are used to promote reading and to maintain the inventory. Some special stocks have already been financed. Books for people with dementia are an example. The development association also organizes its own events, for example readings by authors. In addition, the members take part in events organized by the city library.
