The Werne City Library is a city ​​library in Werne , North Rhine-Westphalia . It is located in the old stone house .

history

The library was opened on November 6, 1957 in a room in the city's youth home. 3,000 titles were initially offered to the Werner population.

In 1973 this area had become much too small and the city library moved into a 300 m² barrack on the edge of the city center.

In 1983 the current building was moved into. The old stone house along with a transition to the first floor of a shopping center ("Steinhauscenter") offers sufficient space for the library with its now more than 50,000 media with 900 m².

Current status and statistics

At the end of 2016, the library had around 54,169 media. Of these, around 7,000 titles were AV media (CDs, CD-ROMs, DVDs, audio books and language courses) and more than 1,200 magazine issues. This total inventory was borrowed approx. 126,000 times in 2016 by the approximately 4,500 active users of the library (300 of them using the online library ). In total, around 40,000 people visited the library this year.

There are public internet workstations for everyone and a public WiFi network in and around the building. The library is connected to the German interlibrary loan and thus ensures a supply of media that are not available on site. Since 2012, the city library has been a participant in Onleihe 24 (formerly Onleihe Hellweg-Sauerland) with around 15,000 e-books and other online media that can be borrowed as part of a library membership for use on e-book readers, PCs, tablets or smartphones.

Support association

The Friends of the City Library Werne e. V. was founded as one of the first of its kind in Germany in 1976 as a non-profit association for the purpose of providing financial aid and conveying the goals of the city library. Every year the association promotes priorities in media buying and organizes events such as B. readings or library fairs on specific topics.

Reading promotion

With its volunteer reading mentors, the city ​​library particularly encourages reading interest among children up to the age of around nine. To this end, the association “Lesewelt Werne e. V. “founded, z. B. Reading hours are organized in kindergartens and primary schools in the city.

The library is a member of the “Bildungspartner NRW” initiative of the North Rhine-Westphalian state government, the municipal umbrella associations of the City Council of North Rhine-Westphalia and the Association of Cities and Towns in North Rhine-Westphalia , which aims to promote cooperation between schools and libraries. As part of this initiative, there are partnerships with several schools and daycare centers.
