The listed Stadtbad Gotha is a historic bath building from the Art Nouveau period in a central location on the northern edge of Gotha's old town. The original building was completed in 1909 and closed in the 1980s after a long period of use because it was dilapidated. From 2007 the bathroom was completely renovated and modernized to more than double the area. It reopened in 2014.

history

The historic Stadtbad was planned and built between 1905 and 1909 under the Gotha town planning officer Wilhelm Goette , in the context of a wave of similar pool buildings in Germany. As in other cities, a swimming pool, cleaning baths and a sauna were built in Gotha . Stylistically, the bathroom can be assigned to historicism , with strong echoes of Art Nouveau.

The revitalization project created a barrier-free family, school and club bathroom with additional wellness and therapy offers. The old swimming pool is still the centerpiece, as are the other historical parts of the pool, such as B. the domed rooms of the sauna have been integrated. There was also a new sauna, a 25 m sports pool suitable for competitions and a teaching pool. The bathroom has won several architecture prizes.

description

The expansion of the historic Stadtbad Gotha is clear in terms of urban planning and architecture, but reserved. The new components are arranged in a linear structure to the west and east of the historic swimming pool, set back behind the historic front building on Bohnstedtstrasse.

The central interiors are the historic swimming pool with therapy pool and the new swimming pool with sports or multi-purpose pool, teaching pool and children's pool. The connecting element between them is the new large staircase. The old main entrance on Bohnstedtstrasse is also the new entrance to the renovated bathroom. From the central oval of the vestibule, the upper floors and especially the changing area in the basement are accessible via the historic staircase and an elevator . There is also access to the swimming pool.

The connection of old and new into one unit was a challenge in many places, especially when adapting the old building to today's requirements of statics, building physics , room acoustics and energy technology as well as fire protection and especially when adapting the technical systems. In terms of design, the main focus was on creating plausible contemporary room designs in a historical context. In addition to light, color is an essential design element.

The new building consists of a reinforced concrete skeleton structure . Reinforced concrete columns carry prestressed concrete - single-span girders with a span of 20 m and a static height of around 1.4 m. The roof consists of cross-laminated timber elements with an insulated flat roof structure above. The investigation and renovation of the supporting structure of the old building required considerable effort.
