The light rail bridge in Gera

The Stadtbahnbrücke is a pedestrian bridge over the White Elster in the north of the Untermhaus district of Gera . It connects the Schafwiesensiedlung on the left (western) bank of the river with the turning loop of the tram line 1 , which opened in November 2006 and from which it takes its name.

Technical specifications

The bridge is held in place by two steel pylons and is 130 meters long and 2.50 meters wide. The bridge decking consists of untreated European oak.

history

The construction of the bridge was discussed controversially for a long time. The Conradstrasse in the Schafwiesensiedlung was originally supposed to be extended by a road bridge over the White Elster, which was stopped by a residents' initiative. Instead, it was decided to build a footbridge to connect the settlement to the new tram line. Construction, for which Geraer Verkehrsbetrieb acted as client, began in January 2007; On April 22nd, 2007 the bridge was inaugurated by Geras Mayor Norbert Vornehm .

In May 2007 the bridge was officially named Stadtbahnbrücke ; alternative names were also Stadtbahnsteg and Conradbrücke or Conradsteg .
