History and description

City wall at the Jewish cemetery

Since the end of the 13th century, the monastery district and the city mountains were surrounded by a strong city wall reinforced with seven towers. The city was accessible through two lockable gates. The Buttenturm on the north side of the fortification has been preserved, it was in front of the city wall and was used to guard a spring in the small Draken cave in order to ensure the vital drinking water supply. It was connected to the old town hall by an underground passage. In the southeast, the remains of a round tower have been preserved, which was used at times for the water supply. Parts of the old city wall are still preserved at the Jewish cemetery .
