Carl Herman Landé (born January 23, 1924 in Tübingen , Germany ; † May 22, 2005 in Lawrence , Kansas , USA ) was a German-born American political scientist.

Life

Carl Landé was born to Alfred Landé and Elizabeth Grunewald-Landé. At the age of five, he and his parents moved from Germany to the USA, where their father had received a reputation as a highly qualified quantum physicist. As a result of this fact, the young family of Jewish origin took a step that would have been necessary four to ten years later as a result of National Socialism in the Third Reich , albeit on far more risky terms. He has a brother named Arnold.

Carl Landé studied at the same university where his father taught and researched as a full professor, and graduated in Political Sciences with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Ohio State University and a doctorate from Harvard University . For his dissertation he was awarded the Edward M. Chase Prize for the best dissertation on a subject related to promoting world peace.

Dr. Carl Landé married the communication scientist who later taught at the University of Kansas Dr. Nobleza Castro Asuncion – Landé († February 13, 2010), of Filipino origin, who met professionally at Yale University . The couple had two sons, James and Charles.

From 1960 to 1962 and from 1968 to 2000 Landé was a full professor of political science and East Asian studies at the University of Kansas . He has also taught at Yale University, Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippine capital, Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, and Sheffield City Polytechnic in the United Kingdom. In 2000 he retired and retired into private life.
