The town castle Banska Bystrica is a symbol of the historical core of the town of Banska Bystrica , Slovakia . It is located in the upper part of the central square.

history

The castle was built next to the original miners' settlement. It was supposed to protect the profits from ore mining and the royal treasury. The individual buildings were walled in with a fortification.

The castle area mainly consists of:

  • the parish church of the Virgin Mary
  • the Matthias House (Slovak Matejov dom )
  • of the Slovak Church
  • the town hall
  • the rectory
  • the fortification with bastions and entrance gate with a barbican

Marien Church

The oldest building of the castle is the late Romanesque parish church of the Virgin Mary from the second half of the 13th century . The church became the center of the new fortress. Originally it was surrounded by a cemetery .

The church was rebuilt in the 16th century . This is also documented by the preserved oratory with a Gothic cross vault , the side chapel of St. Barbara, the late Gothic winged altar by Master Paul from Leutschau and a late Gothic bronze baptismal bowl by Master Jodok . The interior of the church was very valuable at that time. The main altar was made by Master Paul from Leutschau and it was supposed to be more monumental than the altar in Levoča / Leutschau, but it was destroyed by fire in 1761. In 1767 it was replaced by a baroque altar with paintings by the Austrian painter JL Kracker .

Attachment

The citizens were inspired by the Kremnica Castle and built a stone fortification around the parish church in the last third of the 15th century . The fortification was a high stone wall with circular bastions . In 1512 the entrance gate with barbican was completed. You could enter through two entrances: one entrance was for pedestrians, the other for wagons. The fortification protected the area especially during the miners' uprisings in the 16th century .

town hall

The town hall was built in 1500. Rebuilt in the second third of the 16th century . In 1546 it was significantly expanded. From 1564 to 1565 the facade and the loggia were rebuilt by Master Peregrinus , and the renovations were completed with a roof crown in the Renaissance style. Today the building houses the exhibition rooms of the Central Slovak Gallery.

Slovak church with the Matthias house

The citizens also built other buildings here. The Gothic house of King Matthias (also called the Matthias House) from 1479 has been a unit with the Miners' Bastion and the Church of the Holy Cross (also called the Slovak Church) built in 1492 since the 16th century .

Today's intended use

Today the Central Slovak Regional Gallery has its seat in the former town hall. The churches and the Matthias House are in use, the tower with the gate and the barbican are used for representative purposes after the restoration, which was completed in 2006.
