City café Ottensen

The city café designed under the influence of Hundertwasser, as it was in 2006

The design of the Stadtcafé Ottensen in Hamburg 's Ottensen district was based on ideas by the artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser .

The city café, housed in a former fire station on Behringstrasse in Ottensen, was designed by the Hamburg designer Jule Beck based on models and with the creative advice of Friedensreich Hundertwasser in his typical style. There were no straight lines and no right angles on the facades and the interior furnishings of the guest room, the structures followed organic shapes and were colorfully decorated with ceramic shards.

The café was closed in 2009 because it was in disrepair, and in 2013 the building was largely demolished with the plan to build a new, multi-storey residential building at this point. After a protest by a citizens' initiative, a compromise was made to preserve the facade and integrate it into the new building, and to reinstall the café true to the original on the ground floor. The new opening took place in July 2015. In May 2018 the café was renamed and has since been called Behrings. On January 1, 2019, the Behrings in Ottensen was closed.
