history

In 1905, Sigmund Aschrott had his gardener Theodor Litz create a public park for the Hohenzollern district he had built on the site of the former Flora nursery . On the occasion of the 1000 year celebration in 1913 and his 85th birthday, Sigmund Aschrott wanted to donate the park to the city of Kassel, with the condition that a city hall be built on the property. After an architectural competition in 1913, the town hall was built. The Flora Parkwas declared a public park with a donation agreement and opened with the town hall. Three green areas were created: the town hall garden in the west, the concert garden in the north and the rose garden in the east. In 1914 the concert garden bordered by colonnades was opened to the public.

The town hall garden was not extended to its present size until 1928/1929 by the garden architect Rudolf Stier . During the renovation work, the site was filled in and enclosed with a wall. There were lime trees and poplars planted on garden design.

The garden architecture concept, which has survived to the present day, was created with narrow paths and flower beds by Albrecht von Eichel – Streiber according to plans by city gardening inspector Georg Beitz . A children's playground has been in the rose garden since it was built. The rose garden was closed in the 1960s.

In 2001, the Goethe Society Kassel donated a Goethe bust by Hans Everding , which commemorates Goethe's visits to Kassel in 1779, 1783, 1792 and 1801.
