history

Romanesque relief stone

The baroque church that shapes the cityscape was built from 1755 to 1756 on the foundation walls of a Gothic church . The ridge leading into the city from the west was used for defensive purposes and was probably an outpost for the imperial palace in Dornburg an der Saale . The church, the cemetery and also the place of retreat for the population when the settlement was attacked developed from this . Now, alongside the sacred facilities, the school and sports field are the meaning and purpose of the area.

From 1990 to 1991 this church and the surrounding area were renovated . A Romanesque relief stone depicting a hurdy-gurdy player has been placed on the north-west side of the Schkölener church.
