The city ​​museum "Wilhelm von Kügelgen" is the city ​​museum of the city of Ballenstedt in Saxony-Anhalt . The museum building is a listed building .

location

It is located in the immediate vicinity of Schloss Ballenstedt at the address Allee 37 , north of Schlossplatz. The Selketalstieg runs south of the house .

Architecture and history

The baroque house was built in 1756 as a city palace and served as a residential building for a courtier . The building was the childhood home of the Bardua sisters. It has a representative seven-axis facade. The entrance is located in the middle axis and can be reached via a two-flight flight of stairs . A baroque door has been preserved as the entrance to the house. The building is covered by a mansard hipped roof .

To the east there is a brick entrance portal and an economic wing.

Inside, parts of the original furnishings, especially the stairs and floors, have been preserved. The garden is north of the house and is designed as a bosquet garden with decorative figures.

In the local register of monuments , the palace is listed as a monument under registration number 094 50168 .

In 1980 the Ballenstedts City Museum moved into the building. It has been named since 2010 after the court painter and chamberlain Wilhelm von Kügelgen (1802–1867), whose life is also dedicated to two exhibition rooms. In the museum, the city history of Ballenstedt is thematized, especially as a residential city. Mainly folklore collections on the work and way of life of the population of the Anhalt Lower Harz Mountains , the settlement and cultural history of the Ballenstedt area as well as the mining and metallurgy of the Anhalt Harz Mountains are shown. There are also changing special exhibitions.

The museum is also used for readings, concerts and lectures.
