The tour begins with the "Prechtl-Kabinett". Michael Mathias Prechtl was born in Amberg and is buried here. Over 100 original drawings and paintings as well as a large selection of posters by the artist are on display. In the section "The Electoral Amberg", unique exhibits accompany the visitor on his way through the electoral time of Amberg (1329–1803). The appearance of the city and its changes from the 16th to the 20th century are presented with 100 objects in the section "A matter of opinion - the image of the city". In the area "Shopping like in grandma's time", a grocer and an Amberg bakery are reminiscent of business life in the "good old days".

The establishment of a dental practice from 1880 with the associated instruments such as drills, tooth forceps and syringes in the "Aspects of Health Care" department shows the more unpleasant aspects of past centuries. In addition, the visitor walks through the sales room of the Adler pharmacy. The facility dates from around 1875 and was in use in Amberg until 2007. The preserved furnishings of the Upper Pharmacy from around 1739–50 are on display in the foyer of the museum. This facility is likely to be one of the oldest preserved city pharmacies in Bavaria.

The section "Clothing from yesterday and today" offers the visitor a walk through 200 years of clothing history. It shows how the appearance of humans has changed from 1800 to the present day. The topic of regional handicrafts with professions related to the "ornament of man" follows with direct reference: hairdresser, shoemaker and goldsmith.

The Königlich Bayerische Gewehrfabrik Amberg (1801–1919), the only rifle factory in Bavaria, is an early example of an industrial company for the industrial sector. The variety of faience products (1759–1800) and earthenware (around 1795–1913) is presented in the special collection "Amberger Fayence and Stoneware" with around 1000 objects. Enamel crockery is one of the early industrial products for the household and kitchen. The enamel goods factory Gebrüder Baumann (1872–1986), with up to 2500 employees around 1900 one of the largest companies in Upper Palatinate, exported worldwide. As a contribution to the social and industrial history of Amberg, the company history as well as the manufacture and variety of shapes of tin goods, from cooking pots to chamber pots, are explained.

Special exhibitions, educational activities and a wide range of themed tours round off the museum's offering.
