The Kobe City Museum ( Japanese 神 戸 市立 博物館 , Kobe shiritsu hakubutsukan ) in the Mitte district of Kobe (Japan) has united the City Museum of Ancient Art and the City Museum of Namban Art since 1982 . The museum is housed in a neoclassical building from 1935, the former Kobe branch of Yokohama Shōkin Ginkō (English Yokohama Specie Bank ), the later Tōkyō Ginkō (English Bank of Tokyo ).

The collection

The current archaeological collection was originally built in 1969 as an archaeological museum ( 神 戸 市立 考古 館 , Kobe shiritsu kōkokan ) in connection with the large bell find from the Yayoi period in Sakuragaoka near Kobe. The collection with Namban art - the art in Japan that deals with the foreigners in the country between 1550 and 1640 - goes back to the collection of the entrepreneur and collector Ikenaga Hajime ( 池 長 孟 ; 1891–1955), which was last known as Kobe Namban Art Museum ( 神 戸 市立 南蛮 美術館 , Kobe shiritsu Namban bijutsukan ) was housed in its own building. 8000 old maps from all over the world form another important collection. It goes back to the collector Namba Matsutarō ( 南波松 太郎 ; 1894–1995) and the geographer Akioka Takejirō ( 秋岡 武 次郎 ; 1895–1975). The museum's total inventory includes almost 39,000 objects.
