history

ViaThea in the city park

As early as the 18th century, the city began to plant trees on the paths in front of the city walls . The path that runs south through the Webertor (also called the gate ) was laid out from 1829. For a long time it was called the Promenade and ran between the cattle pasture - today's city park - and the gardens of wealthy Görlitz citizens to the Obermühlberge at the log cabin. In 1830 work began on creating a park on the former cattle pasture. The first plans by a Görlitz art gardener date from 1834. In May 1855, the Prussian General Garden Director of all royal Prussian gardens, Peter Joseph Lenné Görlitz. He gave the city advice on changing some parking situations. The plan made by Lenné for this can no longer be found.

At that time, however, there was not enough money to implement Lenné's plan. The construction of the city park took years, depending on the availability of the city's financial resources. The landscape park that has emerged over the years is rich in deciduous and coniferous trees and large lawns, which have been preserved to this day. In 1910, the rose terrace (also: rose garden ) was laid out at the south-eastern entrance to the park according to plans by gardening director Schneider. It was redesigned in 1962 by the horticultural director Henry Kraft and renewed again in 1995. The parking garage is located behind the rose garden. It was built in 1845 as an apartment for the park gardener and was later the seat of the park administration. Today the house is the Parkhäuschen café .

The street theater festival ViaThea opens annually in the city park . The artists use the park as an open-air stage.

Fountains, monuments, sculptures and water features in the park

Former fountain in the city park

In the course of the decades several monuments and water features have been erected or installed in the city park. In addition to the Humboldt Fountain, Humboldt Monument, Ball Monument, Meridian Stone and Sculpture Despair, there are several small works of art in the park, such as B. the girl with the rabbit at the parking lot and the sundial in the rose garden. The monument, consecrated to the botanist, natural scientist and Africa traveler Hermann Steudner in 1874, was dismantled in 1942, the bronze bust was melted down for armament purposes and the pedestal was placed in the municipal cemetery . The HISTORICA eV association is committed to a faithful reconstruction of the monument by 2013.

The wooden portico once stood at the junction with Schützenstrasse. It was erected in 1815, redesigned in 1840 and finally dismantled in the first post-war winter 1945/1946 in order to use the built-in wood as fuel. The so-called goldfish pond is located in the immediate vicinity of the sculpture Despair . The pond is to get its former fountain back in the course of renovation work in the park in 2012.

The sealing of the pond basin and the installation of a six to eight meter high fountain are just some of the plans for the park renovation. The park is to regain its former appearance through tree felling and new planting. In addition to the clearing around some older trees, as in the adjacent part of the park in front of the synagogue, the restoration of the avenue along the Schützenweg is planned. The circular route around the Humboldt monument and the neighboring fountain is also to be restored.

Humboldt Fountain & Humboldt Monument

The ornamental fountain was built in 1875. At that time there was a zinc cast sculpture in the middle of the stone fountain basin. In 1929, the original cast zinc sculpture in the middle of the fountain was finally replaced by the fountain figure of the fishing boy . The new sculpture was donated by the Görlitz art glass merchant Ewald Schneider. In 2004, the fountain sculpture was restored with the financial help of the Görlitzer Lions Club and the Old Town Foundation . The restoration of the fountain basin will follow in 2011.

To the north of the fountain is the Humboldt monument with his bust. It is reminiscent of the natural scientist Alexander von Humboldt . The inscription on the base reads: "In memory of Alexander von Humboldt 1769 - 1859". It comes from Daniel Christian Rauch and was set up in 1871.

Spherical monument

The ball monument commemorates the soldiers who died of typhus in Görlitz hospitals in 1813. According to reports, it was primarily French and Russian-commanded Bavarian soldiers who were buried in the former cattle pasture - today's city park.

Meridian stone

According to current calculations, the 15th meridian runs through the city via the Neisse meadows near the town hall. The meridian stone symbolizing the globe was set up in 1961 in memory of the first manned space flight of the Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin on the 15th meridian, which according to calculations at the time was a little further west. The bronze bracket embedded on the round cover plate shows the exact course of the longitude - based on the calculation basis at the time. The inscription on the spherical stone reads: “The entire Central European Time - CET - applies to Scandinavia - the states of Central Europe - Hungary - Yugoslavia - Italy - Tunisia - Cameroon based on the mean local time of the 15th meridian. Erected in 1961, the year of the first human space flight ”. This meridian stone comes from Carl Däunert.

Despair

The sculpture was once located in the facilities of the castle of Count Fritz von Hochberg in the Silesian Halbau . The imperial count Hans Heinrich XV. von Hochberg donated the sculpture to the city of Görlitz in 1919. On the base there is a subsequent inscription: "Legacy of a Görlitz child, Mr. Adolf Berthelmann 1919". The count probably wanted to remember his secretary Adolf Berthelmann, who died in 1918 and was born in Görlitz. The monument consists of artificial stone - a concrete casting and is surrounded by a protection due to the sensitivity to the weather in the cold season. The sculpture comes from the sculptor Richard Engelmann .

playground

There was a playground in the city park as early as 1852. The sources report this year on the construction of an indoor storage facility for the playground equipment. The playground was last redesigned in May 2010. The playground takes up the theme of city and country . The ring-shaped system is divided into two halves by an indicated brook, with the town on one side and a floodplain on the other. On the city side, the various play equipment should represent a city tower, a prison, a bakery, a post office and the town hall. On the rural side there is a mill, an ox cart, a climbing forest and a customs post.
