The ViaThea is an international street theater festival in the East Saxon city of Görlitz and its neighboring Polish city of Zgorzelec . It has been held annually for three days in summer since 1995 on bridges, squares and streets as well as in green areas in neighboring German-Polish cities. The opening events always take place on Thursday evening in the city ​​park . In the years 2007-2010, the events took place on Sunday in Jakob Boehmes' birthplace, about 20 kilometers southeast - in Zawidów (until 1945: Seidenberg).

International artists and theater groups transform the inner and the old town of both cities into an open-air theater stage and offer the audience plays from the fields of performing and visual arts , mask and puppet theater , Cirque Nouveau and physical theater . Also plays with actors on stilts , Walk acts , dance theater , music, artistry , acrobatics and parades are among the annual events as part of ViaThea.

Access to the venues is free. The street theater festival is financed by sponsors, the city of Görlitz and the sale of programs and promotional items. The ViaThea Förderverein is one of the other supporters. The association supports the festival both personally and financially. According to the association, the 2011 festival cost 130,000 euros. The city and the main sponsor Veolia each provided 50,000 euros. The festival is organized by the Gerhart-Hauptmann-Theater Görlitz-Zittau and / or the Musiktheater Oberlausitz / Lower Silesia.

Since the 12th Street Theater Festival in 2006, the event has been held annually with a different theme.
