The Stadtpark is a green area in the old town of Schwedt / Oder in the Uckermark district of the State of Brandenburg .

Location and history

The park is surrounded in the northeast by Lindenallee, in the northwest and west by Stadtpark street and in the south by Bahnhofstraße. On the north side, three high-rise buildings from a housing association delimit the space; on the other sides there is an urban residential area.

The area served as a cemetery between 1680 and the late 1960s . In the late 1960s there was a reburial of graves in the new cemetery at the Vierradener Chaussee. The city administration then built three high-rise buildings, laid out new streets and the park and opened it to the public on January 1, 1978. Originally it was supposed to be developed into a park of friendship among peoples . However, these plans were no longer implemented after the fall of the Wall . Rather, from 2008 to 2011, the city put works by Schwedt and foreign artists from 1961 to 2010 in the park.

General plan of the park

The park can be entered from all sides via wide paths. They lead to several places where seating is set up. The central location is the Mother Earth fountain with bronze sculptures that were created according to designs by the artist Cornelia Schulz - the former wife of Axel Schulz . The fountain was built in 2010 when a park was redesigned and supplemented by bronze reliefs by other artists. These include a sculpture Afrikanischer Jacob by Jo Jastram from 1988. The bronze figure stands on a base made of polished basalt along the avenue of linden trees. In the middle of the park is the sculpture painter and model by Peter Fritzsche from 1977. From 1968 to 1975 Cornelia and Axel Schulz worked on a bronze globe . The work with a diameter of around 140 cm was implemented in May 2008. Farther south is a group of three friezes of the mothers , consisting of a refugee, a Vietnamese mother and a mother from Ghana from 1961.

Linden trees , horse chestnuts , rowan berries , sycamore and norwegian maple and ash maple grow in the park .

In the south-eastern part of the park near Bahnhofstrasse, a boulder belonging to the cultural and historical association Schwedter Dragoons reminds of the time when Schwedt was a garrison town. A marble slab donated by the traditional Bundeswehr association is attached to it.
