The Stadttheater Cuxhaven in Cuxhaven , Rathausstr. 21, has been in operation since 1980.

history

By the end of 1920, the city had converted the dance hall in the former Hotel Glocke (Annenstrasse 3) into a city theater, supplemented by a wine bar and the theater restaurant in the adjoining rooms. Concerts, variety and cinema screenings as well as guest performances by other ensembles were part of the program of the Stadttheater-GmbH, which has existed since 1923 . In 1932 there were four days of cinema and two days of theater. At times it was also called UT (UFA Theater) . In 1934 the Stadttheater-AG was dissolved.

After the Second World War , cinema screenings took place again in the privatized UT. a. through events of the British troop support and the Itzehoer Stadttheater. The equipment in the UT has been improved several times. Other stages were set up in Cuxhaven, such as the light stage in the high school auditorium, a stage in the large hall of the Hotel Zur Sonne and the acting studio ( called Fischkistenbühne ) of the adult education center in the music hall of the Bleickenschule. In 1958 the city bought the UT cinema. In 1963 the dilapidated building was demolished and the Alt-Cuxhaven parking lot was created here. In 1971 the council decided to dissolve the municipal theater ensemble.

The Stadttheater Cuxhaven has existed again since around 1980. It is used as a play theater without its own ensemble with productions from various tour companies (including Hamburger Kammerspiele , Landestheater Detmold , Ohnsorg-Theater ). A consistently high level of capacity utilization has been achieved since the 2010s. As a rule, an event takes place once a week during the season (September to May). A subscription for 19 pieces was offered in the 2019/20 season.

The performances take place in the converted auditorium of the Bleickenschule with a capacity of 350 visitors. Modern technology for a theater was installed. The theater was extensively renovated in 2000 and a freight elevator was installed for the stage structure. A handicapped accessible access could be established.

In May 2018, the 1st Theater Festival New Low German Dramaturgy from the Low German Stage Association took place in the city theater .
