The Merano City Theater

The architects from Munich Martin Duelfer in Art Nouveau designed Stadttheater Meran was opened in 1900's.

history

In order to make Meran more attractive as a health resort, a specially founded theater building committee intended to build a representative theater since 1884. After the financing and location issues had been clarified, a competition was announced, which was won by the Munich architect Martin Dülfer. Pietro Delugan took care of the execution . The construction costs amounted to 240,000 guilders .

The opening took place on December 1, 1900. Hermann Sudermann was among the guests . Up until 1915 there were over 200 performances per season. The theater was closed that year due to the war.

After the end of the First World War , there were no tourists, and the theater did not reopen until the 1920s. In 1937, the theater was in the course of Italianisierungsmaßnahmen of fascism in Teatro Puccini renamed. In the same year Riccardo Zandonai conducted his opera Francesca da Rimini here .

In the 1960s the theater was used as a cinema. After a fire, the city council decided to have the theater renovated. The original external appearance was to be retained; inside, in particular, the stage technology and the seating had to be renewed. The groups of putti on the facade, made by Georg Schreyögg , which have since been destroyed, have been replaced by replicas.

The new opening took place in 1978, and in 1980 the theater was listed as a historical monument .

Since 1993 the management has been with the Merano City Theater and Kurhausverein. A costume rental is offered from the historical fund.
