Georg Schreyögg (sculptor)

Georg Schreyögg (born August 13, 1870 in Aitrang ; † July 7, 1934 in Munich ) was a German sculptor .

Life and work

Schreyögg was the son of Mathäus Schreyögg (1831–?), An innkeeper and master baker, and Kreszentia Marie, nee. Jörg (1833-1899). He spent his youth in Mittenwald . Schreyögg began his training at the Partenkirchen wood carving school in 1884 , after which he switched to the Munich School of Applied Arts and the Munich Academy of Fine Arts (AdBK). At the AdBK he was a student of the sculptor Wilhelm von Rümann from 1894 to 1901 . From 1901 to 1908 he worked as a freelance sculptor in Munich. In 1905 he married Elisabeth von Barton (1881–1957) with whom he had three children. His son Jörg Schreyögg was a painter and graphic artist .

He received a private scholarship from Prince Regent Luitpold . This was followed by a year-long stay in Italy until he switched to the arts and crafts school in Karlsruhe as a professor in 1909 . In 1909–1912, he created a number of designs for the Karlsruhe majolica factory. From 1911 to 1914 he was a teacher at the painting school in Karlsruhe . Schreyögg taught from 1920 to 1932 as a professor of sculpture at the Badische Landeskunstschule Karlsruhe . After he retired in 1932, he returned to Mittenwald.

Georg Schreyögg was a member of the German Association of Artists .

Honors

  • On August 10, 1930, Schreyögg was awarded the honorary citizen of Mittenwald for his services to the preservation of the Mittenwald peculiarity in rural and picturesque terms .
  • In Mittenwald the Professor-Schreyögg-Platz is named after him.
