The Tehran City Theater ( Persian تئاتر شهر) is a theater located in the center of Tehran , the construction of which was commissioned in 1967 (1347) by Shahbanu Farah Pahlavi . The architect Ali Sardar Afchami, one of the architects of the New Iranian School , who was commissioned with the construction , created a building that integrated both Greek and Roman elements, traditional Persian elements, such as the pillars of Persepolis , and modern elements. The roof structure consists of a dome that takes up style elements from the time of the Ilchane .

The building is designed as a rotunda, which is modeled on the Greek and Roman theaters. The interior consists of five halls. The main auditorium has 579 seats, a smaller hall (Charsu) has a capacity of 120 people. The Talar-e Sayeh room can hold 100 people, the other two halls less than 100 people.

The theater was opened on January 27, 1973 (7th  Bahman 1351 according to the Iranian calendar) with the play The Cherry Orchard by Anton Pavlovich Chekhov , directed by Arie Avanesian, in the presence of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi and Shahbanu Farah Pahlavi.

The performances were initially organized by the office of the Shiraz Art Festival and later by the Iranian National Television (NITV). The theater houses the only professional theater in Iran.

The building's existence is at risk. The building cracked due to construction work on a religious cultural complex on the south side of the theater. According to the mayor of Tehran, a mosque is to be built next to the theater. On the north side, construction work for the Tehran subway is in progress.
