City Theater Wiener Neustadt

The Stadttheater Wiener Neustadt is a municipal theater of the City of Wiener Neustadt in Lower Austria at Herzog-Leopold-Straße 17-21.

The former monastery church of the former Carmelite monastery with the facade facing Herzog-Leopold-Straße forms today's city theater. The narrow two-story building with a hipped roof was built in 1668. Both the monastery and the church were profaned under Joseph II , the church was converted into a theater, and the facade was redesigned in classicist form in 1793. The city theater was opened in 1794. Inside is a small two-tier auditorium, which was renovated from 1977 to 1979 and modernized for 624 seats, with the iron curtain designed by the painter Wolfgang Hutter . The former furnishings of the monastery church, such as the high altar, side altar, pulpit, organ and the sacristy cabinet are now in the parish church of Wolfpassing an der Hochleithen .

Christoph Dostal has been the theater's artistic director since summer 2016 .
