The Bofinger chair , also known as BA 1171 , was designed by the architect and designer Helmut Bätzner in 1964 and, in close cooperation with the Bofinger company based in Ilsfeld , Baden-Württemberg , under the direction of Rudolf Baresel-Bofinger, for the first time in a press operation Series manufactured plastic chair in the world further developed.

Solid- colored , fiberglass-reinforced polyester resin was used as the material during production . In a long series of tests, the characteristic shape of the chair was found with regard to the seat shape, the greatest possible stability with the lowest possible material thickness, the required elasticity, stackability and industrial series production. The pressing process in the double-shell heated steel press mold took less than five minutes and required only minimal manual reworking of the edges.

In 1966 the Bofinger chair attracted the public's attention at the Cologne furniture fair and in the same year received the Rosenthal Studio Prize in the presence of Federal Chancellor Ludwig Erhard , Philipp Rosenthal and Walter Gropius . The Bofinger chair became a contemporary design icon and appeared in numerous publications. In 1971, twelve well-known artists, including Joseph Beuys , Sigmar Polke , Günther Uecker , Wolf Vostell and Stefan Wewerka , dealt with the Bofinger chair at a happening . Museums like the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the Center Pompidou in Paris and the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein added the Bofinger chair to their collections. The Bofinger chair is one of the most important classics of modern furniture design.
