City tower in Trnava

The city tower in Trnava (German Tyrnau ), a Slovak city northeast of the capital Bratislava , was built in the 16th century. The city tower at Štefánikova ul. 1 is a protected cultural monument .

The rectangular tower was built during the Ottoman threat as part of the defense system. As a lookout tower on the Trnavas plain, it offered a sufficient view beyond the city limits. An important task of the guards, who lived on the top floor, was the earlier detection of a fire and the alarm with the two bells from 1692 that are still preserved today .

In 1729 the mechanical clock was installed by Franz Lager, which still works today. You can reach the top of the tower via 135 stairs. A toilet with a wooden seat and lid was built into one of the walls for the first time in the Baroque period . Since 1739 the top of the onion dome has been crowned by a gilded sculpture of Immaculata on a crescent moon. The sculpture with the face on two sides symbolizes the belief and hope that the Virgin Mary of the city of Trnava will never show her back.

Guards worked on the tower until the end of World War II .
