The Stadtwerke Ingolstadt (SWI) is the regional utility in Ingolstadt and the surrounding area with approximately 80,000 customers. The shareholders are the city of Ingolstadt and MVV Energie AG in Mannheim. Stadtwerke Ingolstadt Energie GmbH supplies its customers with electricity , natural gas , district heating and district cooling . Stadtwerke Ingolstadt Netze GmbH operates the electricity and natural gas network in the urban area of Ingolstadt as well as the natural gas network of the surrounding communities. In energy generation, the company is active in the fields of photovoltaics and biogas and operates its own combined heat and power plants.
history
The history of Stadtwerke Ingolstadt begins in 1863, when the city's public gas lighting was opened. From 1897 the citizens were also supplied with gas, and from 1914 also with electricity. In 1933 the sub-areas of supply - gas, water and electricity - merged to form the municipal works. In 1977 the company was renamed Stadtwerke and in 2000 the legal form and a new corporate structure - consisting of a holding company and several subsidiaries. In 2001, MVV Energie AG from Mannheim took over 48.4 percent of the shares in Stadtwerke Ingolstadt.
Corporate structure
The majority of the shares in Stadtwerke Ingolstadt are in municipal hands. The city of Ingolstadt holds 51.6 percent of the energy supplier, and MVV Energie AG from Mannheim has held 48.4 percent since 2001.
Stadtwerke Ingolstadt Beteiligungen GmbH acts as a holding company and holds 100 percent of the following subsidiaries:

Stadtwerke Ingolstadt Beteiligungen GmbH is also the sole shareholder of Ingolstädter Verkehrsgesellschaft - responsible for local public transport in Ingolstadt.
Coverage area
Stadtwerke Ingolstadt Netze GmbH operate the Ingolstadt electricity, gas and district heating network. The supply area with electricity corresponds to the urban area of Ingolstadt. The gas supply also extends to the cities of Vohburg and Geisenfeld as well as to the municipalities of Baar-Ebenhausen, Buxheim, Eitensheim, Gaimersheim, Großmehring, Hepberg, Karlskron, Kösching, Lenting, Manching, Reichertshofen, Stammham and Wettstetten in the outskirts of Ingolstadt.
Regional importance
According to a study by the systems research institute Eduard Pestel from Hanover, the Ingolstadt municipal utilities induce an annual economic boost in the Ingolstadt region of around 52.5 million euros. In addition, investments, business relationships and taxes secure around 700 more jobs in addition to the company's 300 jobs.
engagement
Stadtwerke Ingolstadt is particularly active in Ingolstadt and the surrounding area in the areas of culture, social affairs, the environment and sport. The energy supplier supports u. a. the two professional sports clubs FC Ingolstadt 04 (soccer, 2nd Bundesliga) and ERC Ingolstadt (ice hockey, DEL), numerous popular sports clubs and the Ingolstadt half marathon. In terms of cultural sponsorship, Stadtwerke is, among other things, partners of the Georgian Chamber Orchestra based in Ingolstadt, the Simon Mayr Society and the Ingolstadt Old Town Theater. In the social area, they support, among other projects, the “Breakfast for All” initiative at Ingolstadt primary schools, the senior citizens' aid “Together for one another” and the media education school project “Class! Kids” on the topics of the environment and saving energy. As part of “Klasse! Kids”, for example, they offer their own environmental lessons at primary schools.

Tariff products
electricity
Stadtwerke Ingolstadt supply private and business customers with basic and replacement supply INstrom basis, the electricity tariff SparINstrom and with the green electricity product INstrom aquavolt, which is obtained from hydropower on the Danube and is certified by the Grüner Strom Label eV and awarded "Gold".
natural gas
In the natural gas sector, the basic supply tariff INgas basis, the tariff INgas prima and the fixed price product INgas garant exist for private customers. Business customers are supplied with the tariff INgas profi.
District heating
The district heating network of Stadtwerke Ingolstadt supplies private and commercial customers with heating energy. Above all, the industrial waste heat from the Petroplus refinery and the waste incineration plant is used for this. The largest customer of the group, which is designed for 310 gigawatt hours per year, is the automobile manufacturer Audi AG. Stadtwerke invested a total of 23 million euros in the project, which saves around 67,000 tons of carbon dioxide every year.
District cooling
In summer, part of the district heating is converted into district cooling by absorption chillers. Stadtwerke Ingolstadt offers these for cooling buildings, for example.
Renewable energy
Stadtwerke Ingolstadt does not act solely as an electricity trader, the company is also involved in the decentralized generation of renewable energy. The SWI subsidiary reginova GmbH built a biogas plant with an output of 250 kilowatts in Unterstall near Neuburg. 1900 megawatt hours of electricity are generated there every year. The company operates a photovoltaic system with an output of 565 kilowatts on the roof of the soccer stadium of FC Ingolstadt 04. It supplies around 120 four-person households.
Electromobility
Stadtwerke Ingolstadt subsidizes the purchase of so-called e-bikes and offers several free charging stations for these bicycles with electric motors in the urban area of Ingolstadt. There is also a free charging station for electric vehicles in front of the SWI building. There is also an electric vehicle as well as several e-bikes and Segways in the supplier's fleet.
