The steel street is the red light district in the western district of the city of Essen .

Bordellstrasse has existed here since around 1900, at that time under the name Heilig-Geist-Strasse. It is considered to be one of the oldest brothel streets in Germany. It is a dead end street with a privacy screen. It is located northwest of the city center , about 200 meters southwest of the University of Duisburg-Essen (built in 1972) and 300 meters northwest of the Limbecker Platz shopping center (built in 2008/2009).

In 1965, the magazine Der Spiegel gave an indication of 17 houses with a total workforce of sometimes over 200 prostitutes , including some from Italy, Holland and France. In 2013, 17 houses with around 100 to 120 women were specified.

The Bandidos have an influence here . According to the Essen police spokesman Ulrich Faßbender, the Bandidos had a monopoly among the rocker gangs in 2013 . In February 2012, some Bandidos were injured in a knife fight in Stahlstrasse.
